John Hendra

John Hendra
John Hendra (born 1960, Canada) currently serves as the Assistant Secretary-General for Policy and Programme at the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women). He was appointed by the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon on 11 March 2011.

As a Deputy to the Executive Director of UN Women, Mr Hendra leads the bureau which provides policy analysis, research and training, programme management and oversight.

Before joining UN Women, Hendra served the United Nations in many countries. He was United Nations Resident Coordinator and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative in Viet Nam, United Republic of Tanzania and Latvia. He has also worked at the highest level with UN Member States on development programming and conducting development policy dialogue. From 2000-2002, Mr Hendra served as the Deputy Director of UNDP’s Bureau for Resources and Strategic Partnerships.

Mr Hendra obtained his Master’s degree in development studies from the University of Toronto and his Bachelor of Arts from Queen’s University in Political Studies. He is married and has two daughters.
